The loss of vision that has already occurred is usually permanent.
The loss of vision that has already occurred is usually permanent. Eyeglasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery cannot usually cure or reverse low vision. There are certain ways and treatments to help the patient improve and cope with vision loss, perform everyday activities more easily, and keep the vision from getting worse. Treatment options also depend on the eye condition causing low vision.
Treatment of low vision includes the following coping mechanisms, rehabilitation, and medical treatment:
Using brighter lights at home and/or while working Wearing anti-glare sunglasses
Using a magnifying lens to read small prints Avoiding excessive screen time Using voice recognition appliances and software Avoiding straining the eyes excessively and resting the eyes adequately Medical or surgical treatment of the underlying causative disease to prevent worsening the vision Maintaining a healthy diet to maintain eye health. Vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids play a role in maintaining eye health. These nutrients may be taken by consuming foods, which are rich in them, or as supplements.
What is low vision? Low vision means diminished vision; the visual acuity is 20/70 or worse that cannot be fully corrected by surgery, wearing glasses or contact lenses. In low vision, a person does not become completely blind; there is still some sight that can sometimes be coped with or improved with the help of visual aids and visual rehabilitation. With appropriate management and regular follow-up, the vision loss can be prevented from worsening.
The American Optometric Association classifies low vision into two categories:
Partially sighted: The person has visual acuity between 20/70 and 20/200 with conventional prescription lenses.
Legally blind: The person has visual acuity no better than 20/200 with conventional correction and/or a restricted field of vision, which is less than 20 degrees.
The ratio measurement of vision:
This describes the visual acuity or the sharpness of vision at 20 feet from an object. For example, 20/70 vision means that the patient is at 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision would be able to see at 70 feet.
What are the types of low vision? The most common types of low vision include:
Loss of central vision: Characterized by a blind spot in the center of one’s vision.
Loss of peripheral (side) vision: The person does not have any vision on either side or above and below eye level. Central vision, however, remains intact.
Night blindness: The inability to see in poor lighting or dark and when outside at night.
Blurred vision: Objects both near and far appear blurry or out of focus.
Hazy vision: The entire field of vision appears to be covered with a film of haze or glare.
What causes low vision? Anyone at any age can be affected by low vision. Low vision is relatively more common in adults over the age of 45 and the risk increases further over the age of 75. Low vision is not a typical sign of aging. There may be one or more conditions causing low vision. These are usually the result of disorders or injuries affecting the eye or a systemic disorder affecting the eyes, such as diabetes. There are several causes of low vision, including:

What are the signs and symptoms of low vision? Low vision can cause difficulty in performing daily activities. It can also be dangerous because it causes difficulty while driving, crossing the road, and operating heavy machinery. Hence, leading to accidents. People with low vision may experience the following symptoms:
Loss of central vision Night blindness Loss of peripheral vision Blurred vision Hazy vision Difficulty distinguishing colors Difficulty identifying faces of people Difficulty viewing digital screens Eyestrain
How is low vision diagnosed? A thorough eye examination is needed to diagnose the causes of low vision. Several diseases can cause low vision. Low vision can be diagnosed by an ophthalmologist by simple out-patient diagnostic tests as a part of a detailed eye exam. The doctor would ask the patient to read letters and numbers from different distances, near and far. The field of vision is also studied.
Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12, NKJV.
There is not one in a thousand, married or unmarried, who realizes the importance of purity of habits, in preserving cleanliness of the body and purity of thought. Sickness and disease is the sure consequence of disobedience to nature’s laws, and neglect of the laws of life and health. It is the house in which we live that we need to preserve, that it may do honor to God, who has redeemed us. We need to know how to preserve the living machinery, that our soul, body, and spirit may be consecrated to His service.
As rational beings we are deplorably ignorant of the body and its requirements. While the schools we have established have taken up the study of physiology, they have not taken hold of the matter with that decided energy which they should. They have not practiced intelligently that which they have received in knowledge. And they do not realize that unless it is practiced, the body will decay.
Notwithstanding all the light shining forth from the Scriptures on this subject; notwithstanding the lessons given in the history of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; notwithstanding the result of plain healthful diet, there is little regard for the lessons penned by those inspired of God. The dietetic habits of the people generally are neglected; there is an increase of tobacco using, liquor drinking, and subsisting on flesh meats….
You are the Lord’s property—His by creation and His by redemption. “Thou shalt love … thy neighbour as thyself.” The law of self-respect, for the property of the Lord is here brought to view. And this will lead to respect for the obligations which every human being is under to preserve the living machinery that is so fearfully and wonderfully made. This living machinery is to be understood. Every part of its wonderful mechanism is to be carefully studied. Self-preservation is to be practiced….
The transgression of the physical law is the transgression of God’s law. Our Creator is Jesus Christ. He is the Author of our being. He has created the human structure. He is the Author of physical laws as He is the Author of the moral law. And human beings who are careless and reckless of the habits and practices that concern their physical life and health sin against God.—The Kress Collection, 45, 46.
The connection of the visible with the invisible world, the ministration of angels of God, and the agency of evil spirits, are plainly revealed in the Scriptures, and inseparably interwoven with human history….
Before the creation of man, angels were in existence; for when the foundations of the earth were laid, “the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.” Job 38:7…. Angels are in nature superior to men, for the psalmist says that man was made “a little lower than the angels.” Psalm 8:5.
The Number and Power of Angels
We are informed in Scripture as to the number, and the power and glory, of the heavenly beings, of their connection with the government of God, and also of their relation to the work of redemption. “The Lord hath prepared His throne in the heavens; and His kingdom ruleth over all.” And, says the prophet, “I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne.” In the presence chamber of the King of kings they wait—“angels, that excel in strength,” “ministers of His, that do His pleasure,” “hearkening unto the voice of His word.” Psalm 103:19-21; Revelation 5:11.
Ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands, were the heavenly messengers beheld by the prophet Daniel. The apostle Paul declared them “an innumerable company.” Daniel 7:10; Hebrews 12:22. As God’s messengers they go forth, like “the appearance of a flash of lightning,” (Ezekiel 1:14), so dazzling their glory, and so swift their flight. The angel that appeared at the Saviour’s tomb, his countenance “like lightning, and his raiment white as snow,” caused the keepers for fear of him to quake, and they “became as dead men.”Matthew 28:3, 4.
When Sennacherib, the haughty Assyrian, reproached and blasphemed God, and threatened Israel with destruction, “it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand.” There were “cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains,” from the army of Sennacherib. “So he returned with shame of face to his own land.” 2 Kings 19:35; 2 Chronicles 32:21.
Angels Help God’s Children
Angels are sent on missions of mercy to the children of God. To Abraham, with promises of blessing; to the gates of Sodom, to rescue righteous Lot from its fiery doom; to Elijah, as he was about to perish from weariness and hunger in the desert; to Elisha, with chariots and horses of fire surrounding the little town where he was shut in by his foes; to Daniel, while seeking divine wisdom in the court of a heathen king, or abandoned to become the lions’ prey; to Peter, doomed to death in Herod’s dungeon; to the prisoners at Philippi; to Paul and His companions in the night of tempest on the sea; to open the mind of Cornelius to receive the gospel; to dispatch Peter with the message of salvation to the Gentile stranger—thus holy angels have, in all ages, ministered to God’s people.
Thus God’s people, exposed to the deceptive power and unsleeping malice of the prince of darkness, and in conflict with all the forces of evil, are assured of the unceasing guardianship of heavenly angels. Nor is such assurance given without need. If God has granted to His children promise of grace and protection, it is because there are mighty agencies of evil to be met—agencies numerous, determined, and untiring, of whose malignity and power none can safely be ignorant or unheeding.
Satan and Evil Angels
Evil spirits, in the beginning created sinless, were equal in nature, power, and glory with the holy beings that are now God’s messengers. But fallen through sin, they are leagued together for the dishonor of God and the destruction of men. United with Satan in his rebellion, and with him cast out from heaven, they have, through all succeeding ages, cooperated with him in his warfare against the divine authority. We are told in Scripture of their confederacy and government, of their various orders, of their intelligence and subtlety, and of their malicious designs against the peace and happiness of men….
None are in greater danger from the influence of evil spirits than those who, notwithstanding the direct and ample testimony of the Scriptures, deny the existence and agency of the devil and his angels. So long as we are ignorant of their wiles, they have almost inconceivable advantage; many give heed to their suggestions while they suppose themselves to be following the dictates of their own wisdom. This is why, as we approach the close of time, when Satan is to work with greatest power to deceive and destroy, he spreads everywhere the belief that he does not exist. It is his policy to conceal himself and his manner of working….
It is because he has masked himself with consummate skill that the question is so widely asked: “Does such a being really exist?” It is an evidence of his success that theories giving the lie to the plainest testimony of the Scriptures are so generally received in the religious world. And it is because Satan can most readily control the minds of those who are unconscious of his influence, that the Word of God gives us so many examples of his malignant work, unveiling before us his secret forces, and thus placing us on our guard against his assaults.
Christ’s Followers Are Safe
The power and malice of Satan and his host might justly alarm us were it not that we may find shelter and deliverance in the superior power of our Redeemer. We carefully secure our houses with bolts and locks to protect our property and our lives from evil men; but we seldom think of the evil angels who are constantly seeking access to us, and against whose attacks we have, in our own strength, no method of defense. If permitted, they can distract our minds, disorder and torment our bodies, destroy our possessions and our lives. Their only delight is in misery and destruction.
Fearful is the condition of those who resist the divine claims and yield to Satan’s temptations, until God gives them up to the control of evil spirits. But those who follow Christ are ever safe under His watchcare. Angels that excel in strength are sent from heaven to protect them. The wicked one cannot break through the guard which God has stationed about His people.—The Great Controversy, 511-513, 516,
There are many essential nutrients that boost overall health. We all know the importance of vitamins A, B, C, D and E. But vitamin K is another important vitamin that has an equally important role to play in your health and fitness. You need this nutrient for many important functions in your body. This is a fat-soluble vitamin that keeps your bones healthy. It also promotes the healing of wounds and is good for your heart. This is also an essential nutrient for diabetics as it improves insulin sensitivity. Regular intake of this vitamin can significantly bring down your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. There are certain foods that contain this nutrient, especially leafy greens. Here we reveal a few foods that you must add to your daily diet to get the benefits of this vitamin. These foods are also loaded with other nutrients that will help you maintain your overall health.
Through Jesus Comes Health and Relief From Perplexities, October 20
Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah. And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” Exodus 15:23, 24 NKJV.
The Lord had a lesson to teach the children of Israel. The waters of Marah were an object lesson, representing the diseases brought upon human beings because of sin. It is no mystery that the inhabitants of the earth are suffering from disease of every stripe and type. It is because they transgress the law of God.
Thus did the children of Israel. They broke down the barriers which God in His providence had erected to preserve them from disease, that they might live in health and holiness, and so learn obedience in their journeyings through the wilderness. They journeyed under the special direction of Christ, who had given Himself as a sacrifice to preserve a people who would ever keep God in their remembrance, notwithstanding Satan’s masterly temptations. Enshrouded in the pillar of cloud, it was Christ’s desire to keep under His sheltering wing of preservation all who would do His will.
It was not by chance that in their journey the children of Israel came to Marah. Before they left Egypt the Lord began His lessons of instruction, that He might lead them to realize that He was their God, their Deliverer, their Protector. They murmured against Moses and against God, but still the Lord sought to show them that He would relieve all their perplexities if they would look to Him. The evils they met and passed through were part of God’s great plan, whereby He desired to prove them.
When they came to the waters of Marah, “the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? And he cried unto the Lord; and the Lord shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them.” .Though invisible to human eyes, God was the leader of the Israelites, their mighty Healer. He it was who put into the tree the properties which sweetened the waters. Thus He desired to show them that by His power He could cure the evils of the human heart.
Christ is the great Physician, not only of the body, but of the soul. He restores us to our God. God permitted His only begotten Son to be bruised, that healing properties might flow forth from Him to cure all our diseases.
Vitamin D, or the ‘Sunshine Vitamin as it is also known as, is one of the essential nutrients that makes your bones and teeth stronger, wards off infections and diseases and keeps you cheerful. This fat-soluble vitamin can also bring down your risk of cancer, autoimmune diseases, heart disease and diabetes. But unfortunately, as many as 50 per cent of the global population suffers from vitamin D deficiency. There are many reasons for this including low exposure to sunlight, bad dietary choices and an unhealthy lifestyle. This is bad for overall health. We have now one more reason to maintain the levels of this vitamin in our body. Researchers from the North Carolina State University in the US have found that vitamin D deficiency during early development can disrupt the metabolic balance between growth and fat accumulation. Using a zebrafish model, the study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, says that there is a strong association between this vitamin and metabolic homeostasis, or equilibrium. Vitamin D deficiency can cause increase in size and number of fat cells According to them, the vitamin D deficient zebrafish exhibited both hypertrophy and hyperplasia – an increase in both the size and number of fat cells. They also had higher triglycerides and cholesterol, which are hallmarks of metabolic imbalance that can lead to cardio-metabolic disease. This, combined with stunted growth, indicates that this vitamin plays an important role in the ability to channel energy into growth versus into fat storage. It can also stunt growth For the study, the research team looked at groups of post-juvenile zebrafish on one of three diets: Some were give no vitamin D (or vitamin D null), some were enriched with vitamin D and others formed the control group. The zebrafish spent four months on their particular diet, then the researchers looked at their growth, bone density, triglyceride, lipid, cholesterol and vitamin D levels. Researchers also examined key metabolic pathways associated with fat production, storage and mobilization and growth promotion. The zebrafish in the deficient group were, on average, 50 per cent smaller than those in the other two groups, and they had significantly more fat reserves.
Difficult to reverse effects, say experts After the initial testing, the vitamin D deficient zebrafish were given a vitamin D enriched diet for an additional six months, to see if the results could be reversed. While the fish did continue to grow and begin to utilize fat reserves, they never caught up in size with the other cohorts and they retained residual fat deposits. This work shows that deficiency in this vitamin can influence metabolic health by disrupting the normal balance between growth and fat accumulation. According to researchers, the energy that should be going toward growth is getting shunted into creating fat and lipids, and this occurrence cannot be easily reversed.
Future work will involve looking at the offspring of vitamin D deficient mothers, to determine whether this vitamin deficiency has epigenetic effects that can be passed down, the researchers noted.
